Mechanism

Tranexamic Acid competitively inhibits plasminogen activation, preventing fibrin degradation and stabilizing blood clots. This reduces bleeding in surgical, gynecological, and trauma-related conditions.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Bioavailability: ~34%
  • Peak plasma concentration: 3 hours
  • Half-life: ~3.1 hours
  • Excretion: Primarily via urine

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Rare: thrombotic events
  • Visual disturbances (rare)

Contraindication

  • Active thromboembolic disease
  • History of seizures
  • Hypersensitivity to Tranexamic Acid
  • Severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Estrogens: ↑ risk of thrombosis
  • Anticoagulants: may reduce efficacy
  • Combined with fibrinolytics: antagonistic effect

Warning and Precautions

  • Monitor renal function during therapy
  • Use with caution in patients with thromboembolic risk
  • Discontinue if visual disturbances occur
  • Not recommended in patients with active clotting disorders
